Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein in red blood cells that transports Oxygen from the lungs to tissues and facilitates the carriage of carbon dioxide back to the lungs.

Where the papers sit

11 papers study hemoglobin directly. Those 11 do not group into themes. Hemoglobin appears as a biomarker, nutritional outcome, transfusion-related measure, diagnostic target, and cancer-resistance factor across unrelated clinical questions. The cluster shares hemoglobin measurement rather than a unified biological theme or research direction. They are no more alike than papers drawn from anywhere in the corpus. 1 new direction follows.

NEW DIRECTION

Hemoglobin is an intracellular antioxidant that drives sorafenib resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma

The hepatocellular carcinoma study finds that HIF1α-KLF4 signaling induces extra-erythrocytic hemoglobin in cancer cells, where it scavenges reactive oxygen species, preserves redox homeostasis, and promotes sorafenib resistance 42744801Sep. This departs from treating hemoglobin primarily as a circulating measure of anemia, disease status, or treatment response: hemoglobin becomes a tumor-cell mechanism of therapy resistance, and suppressing its expression emerges as a way to restore oxidative stress and enhance tumor suppression.

Recent Findings on hemoglobin

Clinical Hemoglobin Associations: Hemoglobin links cancer biology, transplantation, nutrition, infection prediction, TB triage, and blood-based sensing with clinically important outcomes through different pathways. In hepatocellular carcinoma, HIF1α-KLF4 induces extra-erythrocyte hemoglobin, which scavenges reactive oxygen species and promotes sorafenib resistance; hemoglobin upregulation independently predicts poor outcomes 42744801Sep. Higher pre-transplant hemoglobin attenuated delayed granulocyte engraftment and RBC transfusion requirements after allogeneic HSCT, while preoperative anemia predicted hospital-acquired complications during surgery for spinal metastases 42703897Sep42043869Apr. Strict follow-up of therapeutic iron or preventive multiple micronutrient powder and home-based multiple micronutrient powder improved infant hemoglobin, although residual anemia remained common in high-altitude Peru 42647478Aug42318876Jun. Hemoglobin contributed to an explainable Gradient Boosting model for in-hospital infection in systemic lupus erythematosus, underperformed C-reactive protein for TB triage, and was paired with HbA1c in a dual-target SERS sensor 42557059Aug42506936Jul42478624Jul. NHANES and aging-cohort analyses associated lower hemoglobin with diabetic kidney disease and cognitive impairment, but Mendelian randomization showed SNP-specific heterogeneity and the mediation findings require intervention-based validation 42566589Aug41980534Apr.
